Hi,
This being my first outdoor swim I'm not sure about how things work. Can anyone tell me whether wetsuits will be available to hire on the day? Or do I need to take one with me?
Thanks

At GLS wetsuits were available on the day. But cannot guarantee that the same will be true for GSS.
Any way, my advice would be: "don't take the chance".
Wetsuits can be hired from various places on the web (including the Great Swim website). This is a good deal. You can get the wetsuit plenty early, keep it for the season and send it back afterwards. Or keep it if you prefer.
The only downside to this is that if you get one that does not fit you have to pay extra postage to return it and get another. On the upside: - you won't be panicking last minute - you won't run the risk that they don't have the right size - you can practise getting into it (seriously difficult and fun-for-all-the-family entertainment) - you can practise swimming in it; ideally outdoors but at least in water; it does take some getting used to - you can keep the wetsuit and even use it for other events until you have to return it.
If you have not swum in a wetsuit before this really does need some practice. Don't leave it till the last minute unless you really have no other choice.
Happy Swimming.

wiggle.co.uk do a good deal buy the wetsuit the orca s2 for 99 quid, then at the end of the season october i think, you can send it back and get 50 quid back. You will definitely need to practice getting into it and swimming in it. This is my 1st event too, and my husband howled with laughter at me trying to get in and out of it. I huffed and puffed and built up a right sweat!!! Not something to do for the first time in public. Ask at some of your local tri clubs if you can swim with them and get some practice in quick. Good Luck, I'm going to need all the luck I can get, starting to wonder if I can make it round

My entire family still howl with laughter EVERY time I try to put my wetsuit on. I am glad to hear that is not only my family that has such a cruel sense of humour.
The plastic bag trick does help a lot.
Happy Swimming

Hi All, Thanks for your advice. I have now bought a wetsuit, just waiting for it to be delivered. Hopefully trying it out on Manley Mere on Tuesday evening. Just have this thing about my feet touching the floor, what is down there?!?
